RESTIF, NICOLAS-EDMÉ [RÉTIF DE LA BRETONNE] Le Pied de Fanchette, ou l'Orfeline Française histoire intéressante et morale ... The Hague and Paris; Humblot and Quillau, 1769. First edition, the issue in which the quotation from Rousseau's letters is replaced by an ornament on the second and third title pages. Three volumes, contemporary calf, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, modern slipcase. 5 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches (14 x 8 cm); 190 [i.e. 160 pp.]; 148 pp.; 191 pp., the preliminaries and terminal leaves in each volume printed in red, table contents of the second volume bound at the end of the first with the contents of the first volume, contents of the third bound at the end of the second volume. Bindings somewhat worn, restored (especially the spine of the second), internally a clean set. A libertine work, this was Restif's second book, partially composed by him; it sold well, but bought him little recompense. The edition is believed to be about a thousand copies. The plot is curious; the orphan Fanchette's pretty feet drive men mad with desire, but after misadventures, her virtuous nature brings about a happy ending. This is an early example of foot fetishism. Childs III. C
