REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA GILT OFFICERS SMALL SWORD WITH SCABBARD AND KNOT.

For a nearly identical example, see plate 213 on page 132 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. Neumann dates the European example in the book between 1755 and 1770. Probably French, the tapered straight double-edged diamond-section blade features 8-3/4" blued and gilded sections of decoration at the top on both sides. The engraved designs include scrolls, stands of arms, and panoplies of arms. The gilt brass hilt features a boat guard with a shell quillon. Grip decorated with spiraling gardening. The round pommel is Aldo gadrooned. Complete with its original tooled brown leather scabbard with brass mounts. CONDITION: Blade retains perhaps 90% original polished, blued, and gilded surfaces. Some minor frosting and thinning. Hilt retains about 90-95% original gilt finish with some high edge wear and scattered dark spots. Scabbard very good with generous amounts of gilt remaining on mounts. Some minor scuffing to leather. A very attractive military officer's small sword.
