REX WHISTLER (1905-44); EDWIN LUTYENS (1869-1944) A 2pp. a.l.s., by Rex Whistler, addressed 20 Fitzroy Street, W.1., to Mrs. Porcelli, with a pen and ink drawing at the head of the paper of a figure crouched over a desk covered in a sackcloth and burning embers, the verso with a diagram of where the paintings are to be situated at the head of the stairs saying 'These are the finished ones. This is very near finished', he says 'I write in sackcloth and ashes to ask you and Colonel Porcelli to forgive - if you can - the terribly long time I have been over the paintings ... I now have the first three panels finished (all but certain details in the foreground), and the fourth big canvas will be ready for fixing by the end of next week I should say...Again forgive me for being so slow but I have been putting an immense amount of detail into them - which has been great fun for me but has slowed everything up - apart from my long truancy abroad this summer!'; together with 2 a.l.s., and one t.l.s., by Edwin Lutyens to Mrs Porcelli.
