Rhodd y Parch Archdiacon Beynon, an engraved silver award medal, unsigned, couple standing in rural landscape, she with basket of flowers by her feet, he leaning against an outcrop of rock, legend on scroll above, rev. named (W. Saunders Amy Cyfieithiad govenor Awdl aeluri “Deserted Village” gan Dr. Goldsmith, Gwyl Dewi, 1829), hallmarked cr London 1828, 73mm. Most attractive, almost extremely fine and an extremely rare early Welsh medal; set in ornate surround, with integral clip and ring for suspension (£300-500) Footnote The inscription refers to the poem The Deserted Village, written in 1770 by the Irish-born poet, naturalist and historian Oliver Goldsmith (1730-74). Archdeacon Thomas Beynon (1770-1833), vicar of Llandyfeisant, Dyfed, was an outstanding influence on the revival of Welsh cultural traditions in the 19th century. Illustration reduced
