Beschreibung:

RICHARD HAWKINS (1562?-1622) The Observations of Sir Richard Hawkins Knight, in His Voyage into the South Sea. Anno Domini 1593. London: I[ohn]. D[awson]. for John Jaggard, 1622. 4° (276 x 185mm). Woodcut printer's device to title, woodcut initials, with Dedication Leaf, To the Reader, and Table. (Verso of last leaf dust-stained and restored at lower margin, not affecting text.) Early 20th century red crushed morocco gilt by Lloyd, Wallis & Lloyd, boards with borders of triple gilt rules, turn-ins gilt with floral roll, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in one, others decorated with floral tools, gilt edges. A VERY FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION by one of the greatest Elizabethan seaman, son of Sir John Hawkins and Admiral of New England in 1619. His intended circumnavigation of 1593 in the Dainty ( Repentance ) was to be a trading voyage around Cape Horn from Brazil, to Japan, the Philippines, Moluccas and China but was aborted on the west coast of South America. After plundering Valparaiso he was captured by Spanish ships off Peru, imprisoned at Lima in 1594 and sent to Spain and further imprisonment in 1597. He was ransomed and released for return to England in 1602 and made only one further voyage in 1620-21 against the Algerine corsairs. Published posthumously, this work is one of the finest contemporary accounts published of life at sea at the end of the sixteenth century. Throughout, Hawkins' keen observations on maritime enterprise are rooted in his earlier voyages: the West Indies 1582-83, with Drake and Martin Frobisher on their Caribbean raids 1585-86, and in command of the Swallow against the Spanish Armada in 1589-90. This was the only edition to be published until the Hakluyt Society reprint of 1847. Sabin 30957; Hill 784; Borba de Moraes 395; Palau 112567; ESTC S119816.
