Richard Hicks Bridgens (British, 1785-1846) Ploughing in the Campagna in Rome, Italian Costume designs - Preparatory studies for a costume book published by Baldwin in 1821 watercolour, 25 x 20cm (10 x 8in) (4) Richard Hicks Bridgens was a sculptor, designer and architect. He attempted to set up an architectural practice in Birmingham in 1819 which he closed in 1825 when he moved to Trinidad where his wife had inherited a sugar plantation. In 1836 he printed West India Scenery, with illustrations of the process of making sugar, etc. from sketches taken during a voyage to, and residence of seven years in, the Island of Trinidad. Bridgens' work is an early record of life in Trinidad. Bridgens is today remembered by scholars and collectors for his West India Scenery of 1836, an album of lithographs. Bridgens became the Superintendent of Public Works in Port of Spain and was responsible for the design of the first Government Offices on the site now occupied by the Red House. He died in Trinidad in 1846. The present watercolours come from his Ploughing in the Campagna di Roma, Sketches Illustrative of the Manners and Costumes of France, Switzerland and Italy (pub. London, 1821). Unframed, all are stuck down and with some discolouration and browning, particulalry to the corners. Four separate pages - three vertical, one horizontal.
