ROBERT CREELEY and ROBERT INDIANA Numbers. Stuttgart and Dusseldorf: Edition Domberger and Galerie Schmela, 1968. One of 2,500 copies, with an ink drawing and inscription to Brigid Berlin from artist William Katz on the front free endpaper. Original printed wrappers, without slipcase. 9 7/8 x 8 3/8 inches; unpaginated, silkscreen plates after Robert Indiana text printed on two paper stocks, white and tan, text printed in English and German. Light toning to wrapper, short tears at edges mostly around spine, one with an old tape repair, contents faintly toned in margins ; Together with ROBERT CREELEY and WILLIAM KATZ. A Wall. New York City and Stuttgart: Bouwerie Editions and Edition Domberger, 1969. One of 210 copies signed by the poet and illustrator, this one of 25 copies reserved for the artist and additionally inscribed by William Katz to Brigid Berlin Blindstamped stiff paper wrapper. Unpaginated, silkscreen plate by William Katz, half title printed in white ink. Wrapper lightly soiled, contents faintly toned in margins . Bill Katz is a longstanding behind-the-scenes figure in contemporary artistic circles. Once Robert Indiana's studio assistant and member of Andy Warhol's social circle, Katz is now a designer, architect and aesthetic advisor to a long list of artists, galleries and creatives, including Anselm Kieffer, Jasper Johns Cy Twombly and Diane Von Furstenburg. These two books date from early in his career, when Katz worked as a book designer - he is credited as such in A Wall . On the other hand, he was instrumental in the conception of Numbers in an even more direct way. Katz recalls how he met Poldi Domberger on a plane, who discussed wanting to publish an edition of Robert Indiana's Numbers paintings, because they lent themselves to silkscreen. Katz obviously knew Indiana well, and suggested that Domberger include Robert Creeley's poetry in order to give the book an added textual dimension (Creeley, Robert.
