The Republican forces hoping to spark support both within Spain and around the world initiated a mighty propaganda effort and released hundreds of posters championing various aspects of their cause. This black and white photograph of a foot in an espadrille (the traditional footwear worn by Catalans) crushing a swastika, with the caption, in Catalan, "Smash Facism", is one of the purest and most symbolic images of the fight against Franco in the early years of the Spanish Civil War.
