I front inner hinge broken and front cover loose, extremities rubbed). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF RODRIGUES'S FINE WORK ON THE PALM TREES OF BRAZIL. The author travelled widely in Brazil between 1868 and 1897, pursuing his anthropological studies and assembling a large collection of botanical specimens. He was appointed director of the Manaos botanical museum in 1883, where he stayed until 1889, when he was appointed director of the botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro, aposition he held until his death in 1909. In keeping with his interest in anthropology, the plates to Sertum palmarum Brasilien often show figures of Amazonian tribesmen around the trees in their landscapes; other plates give botanical details of the leaves and fruits.
