(23 3/8 x 16 3/8 in.), half dark green morocco, smooth spines gilt, worn, hinges splitting, plates on guards, lacking one engraved portrait, repaired tears to two text leaves in vol. I, half title in vol. II, and four plates (v. I: 1 and 31, v. II: 11 and 49), plates I:31 and II:11 repaired with scotch tape on versos which has offset onto the following plates (causing slight adhesive loss to image of pl. II:12), pl. 80 and 81 in vol. I detached, a few short marginal tears and clean tears along guards, dampstaining to gutters throughout, some foxing, occasional marginal soiling . Photogravure portrait, 174 chromolithographed plates by J. Goffin fils after Barbosa Rodrigues, black and white halftone text illustrations. Nissen BBI 1660 (citing two portraits). (2)
