DOMAINE DE LA ROMANEE-CONTI The Domaine de la Romanée Conti has long been described as the "central pearl" of the Côte de Nuits. For several centuries now, its wines have been treasured for their strength, finesse and longevity. The domaine's records go back to 1512 and the monks of St. Vivant. the current owners, de Villaine family acquired the estate in the 1870s. The Domaine consists of two monopole wines, Romanée-Conti (1.81ha) and La Tâche (6.06), with major holdings in the grands crus of Richebourg, Grands-Echézeaux, Romanée-St. Vivant and Echeézeaux. 1934 was the first vintage in which DRC could claim sole ownership of La Tâche, the completing portion of the vineyard which had been purchased form the Liger-Belair family the previous year. DRC also has a miniscule holding of Le Montrachet (.68ha). Because of the high quality and necessarily small production, there is always insufficient wine to meet demand of the world's wealthy elite, hence DRC's high prices. Since, 1953 the Domaine has numbered every bottle enabling them to trace its distribution back to the the original barrel if necessary. MB Vintage Wine Romanée Conti The most celebrated Grand Cru in Burgundy, this tiny appelation (an almost perfect square 150 yards by 150) lies in the middle of the slope, being perfectly situated by other famous vineyards such as Richebourg, Romanée St. Vivant. Disregarding its perfect location it is ultimately the very able hands of the Domaine that crafts this highly sought after wine. The average production for this wine is 6000 bottles per annum and the average age of the vines is 47 years. Romanée-Conti--Vintage 1961 Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Level: 5cm Only one fairly recent note: deep in colour with noticeably thick 'tears' or 'legs'; a marvellously rich, brambly, harmonious Italianate nose which was evolving after nearly an hour in the glass; sweet, a big wine. In the pickers' dining room at the Domaine, Nov 1995 **** MB Vintage Wine 1 bottle per lot
