A UNIQUE CHANCE TO ACQUIRE THREE JEROBOAMS OF THE LEGENDARY ROMANEE-CONTI 1978 IN A SINGLE ORIGINAL WOODEN CASE Property of a passionate collector Removed from temperature and humidity controlled storage Vintage 1978 ***** (5 stars) At last, a great vintage. Yet weather-wise it was touch and go: spring and early summer cold, retarding vegetation and flowering. Around the third week in August, the sun came out and superb weather through September and into October saved the vintage which started in the Côte d'Or, around 11 October, resulting in a small but healthy crop, producing wines with good colour, alcoholic content, and notably aromatic. Opening prices surged, 100 up in the same period as 1977. Some members of the trade were concerned about the expense, and whether the consumer would be able to accept this new level of prices. They need not have worried. Thanks to high extract and tannins, the best are still drinking well and some have yet to attain their peak. No good burgundy cellar should be without a bottle or two! MB, Vintage Wine Romanée-Conti--Vintage 1978 Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Bottle numbers 0023, 0024, 0025 Imported by P & S Wine Company in Seattle, Washington Levels: 4.5cm below corks; slightly damp-stained labels, Domaine embossed wax capsules, one wax capsule shortened to reveal Domaine cork embossed "Romanée-Conti 1978" In original wooden case, lid damaged "...Most recently, bottle number 001256: imported by Domaine Chandon. The first and youngest of 11 classic vintages of Romanée-Conti: medium-pale, lively looking, open yellow-amber rim; sweet, rich, lovely fragrance, pure mature 'beetroot' varietal bouquet that opened up in the glass, soft fruit, whiff of raspberry; also sweet on the palate, full-bodied (yet a moderate 13 alcohol), interesting texture, peppery acidity and an upturned, almost spritz, finish. Last tasted at Wilfred Jaeger's Sunday DRC lunch, March 2002 ***** Drink now-2012 ." MB, Vintage Wine 3 jeroboams (3 liters) per lot
