ROME -- [A collection of views of Rome]. Rome: Vatican Press and others, 1699 (or earlier)-1807. Large 2° (529 x 398mm). Mounted on guards throughout, 19th-century manuscript title Roma and 2pp. manuscript index. 62 engraved plates, 1 folding and 61 double-page, by Giovanni Volpato F. Barbazza, Alessandro Specchi and others after Francesco Pannini, Luigi Vanvitelli Giuseppe Vasi Giuseppe Valadier and others. (Occasional light spotting, first plate with small repaired tear and some additional creases.) Mid 19th-century calf gilt, BOUND FOR POPE GREGORY XVI, covers with the centrally-placed Papal arms, large gilt initial 'B' tooled at foot of upper cover and repeated at foot of spine, spine in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece on one, the others decorated in gilt, g.e. (spine and extremities scuffed, occasional small neat repairs). Provenance : Pope Gregory XVI (1765-1846, binding). A fine collection of 18th-century views of Rome, bound for Pope Gregory XVI (elected 2nd February 1831, died 1st June 1846). The set includes 34 of Francesco Panini's views of Rome, 1765-90, including the panorama from Monte Mario in three plates and the Veduta...del Museo Pio-Clementino , cf. Berlin Kat. 2716, Arigoni & Bertarelli, Piante e Vedute di Roma (1939), 175; panorama from the Villa Medici by Cassini after Francesco Miccinelli, 1779, on four separate double-page sheets; Arigoni & Bertarelli 190; Prospetto del nuovo navale di Ripetta by Alessandro Specchi after 1704, on three separate double-page sheets, probably from Rossi's Studio d'Architettura , Berlin Kat 2681; a view of the new aqueduct at Civitavecchia by P.S. Bartoli after Carlo Fontana 1699, on four separate double-page sheets; and a view of the port of Ancona by Vasi after L. Vanvitelli, 1738, on three separate double-page sheets.
