ROSENBERG, MARY ELIZABETH. Corona Amaryllidacea. Bath: "Printed and published for the author, by C.A. Bartlett, Bookseller to the Queen", (advertisement dated "Bath, June 1839"). Folio 445 x 345 mm., contemporary (? original) blindstamped red cloth sides over new cloth-covered boards., red morocco gilt-lettered label on upper cover, marbled edges, original cloth stained and worn, some slight marginal soiling . FIRST AND SOLE EDITION. Printed title (? wrapper title), dedication, advertisement and 8 WATERCOLOR DRAWINGS, the first two signed "MER" beside neat pen-and-ink captions in the same hand, each of the eight drawings with leaf of descriptive letterpress text. EXTREMELY RARE. Miss Rosenberg came from a family of artists in Bath (her brother, G. F. Roscoe 1825-1869 is the best known) and in 1850 she married William Duffield another Bath artist. The book is dedicated to Lord James O'Bryen, president of the Bath Royal Horticultural and Botanical Society. The genus Hippeastra is the chief subject of the work and Spreikelia Formosisssima , a native of South America and Vallota Purpurea Major , a native of the Cape of Good Hope, are among the eight examples. A. Atrorubens was raised by "Mr. Maggs, the intelligent Foreman of the Durdham Down Nursery, near Clifton..." One is tempted to consider that Miss Rosenberg may have examined Priscilla Susan Bury's Monograph on Hexandrian Plants (1831-1834) with its magnificent plates by Robert Havell because the similarity in style, if not in size, is striking. Great Flower Books , p. 74 (only two copies seen); Nissen BBI 1678; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 9516. Provenance : Unidentified consignor (sale, Christie's London, 13 April 1988, lot 269).
