Beschreibung:

Fine morocco book box bearing the royal arms of Marie Antoinette.
(221 x 140 x 56 mm). Full red morocco book box, with striped light green and pink silk lining with brocade trim, tooled in gilt with gilt fleur-de-lys cornerpieces, stamped with the royal arms of Marie Antoinette to the center of both covers, heightened with black morocco inlays, flat spine stamped in gilt in six compartments with repeating fleur-de lys pattern, lettered, “ALMANACH ROYAL”… “ANNEÉ 1778”, gilt tooled turn-ins and flat gilt edges. Condition : hinge slightly cracking, minimal edge-wear; lining lightly worn. Provenance : small paper label, ‘N’ under an imperial crown to the inside front cover suggests ownership by the family of Napoleon. This attractive book box from the library of Marie Antoinette, presumably intended for use to hide items surreptiously, and therefore sporting the title ‘Almanach Royal’, later aquired by Napoleon for his own use.
