Rubens (Peter Paul . Galerie de Rubens, dite du Luxembourg: ouvrage composé de vingt-cinq estampes, soit en couleur, soit en noir, avec l'explication historique et allegorique de chaque sujet, Paris, chez Deseve, Artiste-Editeur, et Deterville, Libraire, 1809, uncoloured engraved portrait of Rubens by Benoist after Le Clerc, 24 uncoloured aquatint plates by Benoist, Duthé, Gabriel, Gautier, and others after Rubens, some light spotting, mainly to first and last leaves and outer margins, early 19th century bookplate of James R. Hoffmann to front pastedown, all edges gilt, contemporary gilt-decorated brown full calf, upper cover near-detached and rear cover detached, a little rubbed and scuffed (mainly to extremities), large folio (binding measures 53 x 35 cm) (Qty: 1) The 24 paintings by Peter Paul Rubens from which the engravings derive, were commissioned in 1621 by Marie de Medici, widow of Henry IV of France, to decorate the Palais du Luxembourg, known as the Marie de Medici cycle.
