RUSCELLI, Girolamo (d. 1566). Le Imprese illustri con espositioni, et discorsi ...Venice: [colophon:] Comin da Trino di Montferrato, 1572. 4 o (230 x 165mm). Three volumes in one, each with engraved title-page. Part 1 with full-page engraved portrait of Ruscelli, 21 large and 111 smaller engraved emblematic devices, many depicted within complex architectural scroll-work with allegorical figures, putti and grotesques. Folding engraved scene of the Battle of Mühlberg (1547). (Occasional light marginal dampstains). Contemporary French vellum, covers with large gilt arabesque, spine sparingly gilt, edges gilt (extremities of spine chipped and patched). Provenance : acquired from Lathrop C. Harper, 1974. MOST PLATES WITH VIVID CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING although some later engravings are partially colored. Praz, p.145; Landwehr, Romanic 648.
