Beschreibung:

RUSKIN, JOHN Autograph letter signed , three pages on his Brantwood stationery, verso of integral leaf blank, addressed to "My Dear Maundrell," [i.e. Charles Maundrell, artist-architect], 16th May 81. 7 x 4 3/8 inches (17.5 x 11 cm); approximately fifty lines written in black ink. Usual folds, minor authorial smudging to a few words on the first page. An important Ruskin letter to his friend Maundrell, in which he mentions his delight in two of Maundrell's architectural studies that were sent to him, and his disgust with the École des Beaux-Arts ("at present occupied exclusively with dead bodies, or naked ones ... intended for the decoration of cemeteries and Brothels.)" He mentions Notre Dame, Viollet-le-duc on village churches on France, and other matters architectural. In all, this is a wonderful letter by the great art critic and patron, enthusiast of Gothic architecture and illumination, the ardent defender of Turner (and opponent of Whistler). C
