RUSSIAN IMPERIAL FAMILY -- An album of photographs, c.1897-1899. Approximately 256 photographs, various sizes (c.40-90 mm. x c.50-120 mm., and the reverse), mounted on 20 card leaves (205 x 260mm.), most with manuscript captions in blue ink, in an album bound in brick-red cloth from D.V. Poliakov and Sons with their ticket, upper board stamped in gilt (some photographs faded or with light wear, occasional light browning in the mounts, cloth extremities rubbed). Provenance

Provenance : Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia Princess Nicholas of Greece (1882-1957, bookplate) Princess Olga of Greece 1903-1997, inscription and then by descent to the current owner. A fine album of photographs from the collection of Princess Nicholas of Greece, Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna, grand-daughter of Tsar Alexander II, mother of Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. The often informal photographs, many of these taken by Grand Duchess Elena on her own camera, record summer visits to imperial residences at Tsarskoe Selo, Pavlovsk, Peterhof, Krasnoe Selo, Ropsha, and others including the St. Petersburg Library, and the armoured cruiser 'Rossiya' which had been launched the year before. The captions, in Grand Duchess Elena's hand, identify numerous family members, notable contemporaries and friends, including Tsar Nicholas II ('Niki') and Alix, Elena's father Grand Duke Vladimir, mother Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, brothers Grand Dukes Andrei, Boris and Kirill, uncles Grand Dukes Paul and Alexis, friends Mary Bielossielsky, Sonia Wassmoundt, Tatishchev, Beliaev, Ushakov, Obolensky, and many others including household staff and pets Pedro and Jack.
