Not examined out of frame. Inscribed in ink on the image: "To my Pal Johnny, Your friend, Babe Ruth." "TELL HIM I'LL HIT A HOME RUN FOR HIM," Ruth told a family friend of Johnny Sylvester. A charming image from one of the iconic moments in the great Babe's career. Ruth stands at the bedside of young Sylvester, shaking his hand, while the frail boy, clad in a hospital gown, beams with delight. Ruth had heard of Sylvester's hospitalization in critical condition after a fall from a horse. The doctors suspected blood poisoning that might claim the child's life. Ruth, who grew up an impoverished orphan, was always willing to use his fame to help needy children. In the course of the 1926 World Series, Ruth hit four home runs, not enough to beat the Cardinals, who won the contest in seven games, but more than enough to delight young Sylvester. The day after the Series finished Ruth visited Sylvester in the hospital where this excellent photo was shot. REPORTEDLY THE ONLY SIGNED EXAMPLE OF THIS POIGNANT IMAGE. Provenance : Superior, 27/28 January 1994, $15,950).
