Safavid Qur'anic Juz' Aqtaraba li-nas (XVII), comprising both the surah Al-Anbya (XXI) and the surah Al-Haj (XXII), in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on paper [Persia, early eighteenth century] 19 leaves (plus one flyleaf at front and back), textually complete, 9 lines in elegant black naskh, surah headings in thuluth, opening two leaves with elaborately decorated head-piece and illuminated borders in blue and gold design with interweaving vines, verses marked with roundels in gold & red, circular blue devices to margins throughout, leaves ruled in colours including orange and blue, small stains, leaves slightly darkened, margins a little wormed (not affecting text), 240 by 180 mm. (written space 165 by 95 mm.); contemporary leather over pasteboards with flap, covers with central block-stamped gold panels filled with elaborate floral designs, framed within blind-stamped floral motif border, inner covers with central medallions and outer corners cut-out of leather, decorated with black stencils laid onto blue paper, upper cover detached, worn A delicately illuminated copy of the seventeenth Juz’ of the Qur’an in a contemporary Persian stamped binding. The binding is stylistically very similar to no. 113 of Haldane, Islamic Bookbindings, 1983, with the visible horizontal join to the leather on the outer panels.
