American, 1822. A silk on linen ground sampler with an all-around border of alternating leaves and flowers and three sections of decoration. The upper section has a central three-towered structure flanked by symmetrical elements including baskets of fruit, crowns, oak trees with acorns, and leafy trees. The middle section is the verse Contentment / While conscience like a faithful friend / Shall through the gloomy vale attend / And cheer our dying breath / Shall when all other comfort cease / Like a kind angel wisper pecae [sic] / And smooth the bed of death, signed Catharine Kellets Work Aged 9 Decr 30th 1822, and has various decorative motifs of animals, flowering plants, trees, and birds. A lower portion features a large three-story school building, two ladies in long dresses and hats, baskets of flowers and fruit, hearts, and flowering urns, framed; 17.5 x 16.25 in. (sight), 21 x 22 in. (frame).
