Brownell, 1899 Private collection These thumbnail sketches are inserts from A Memorial Catalogue of the Paintings of Sanford Robinson Gifford N.A. (New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1881), first edition. These thumbnail sketches were inserts along with Gifford's letter to William Mason Brown in A Memorial Catalogue of the Paintings of Sanford Robinson Gifford N.A. (New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1881), first edition. They accompanied a letter of January 1, 1862, sent by Sanford Robinson Gifford from the Tenth Street Studio building in New York to the artist William Mason Brown (1828-98). As indicated in the letter, Gifford had recently visited Brown in Troy, New York, the latter's hometown. He wrote: "I enjoyed my evening in Troy very much-nor was my exploration thither quite barren artistically. There was a fine deep twilight that evening which I have endeavored to reproduce since my return. My sketch is so far successful that I shall paint a picture from it." This lot is accompanied by the original letter written by Sanford Gifford. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art
