Beschreibung:

(Sarah, daughter of Thomas Fisher sister of Harriet Fiske, married Thomas Fiske, solicitor of Cambridge, 1785-1825, of Elmdon, Essex, 1786-1836) [Travel diary in France], autograph manuscript, 74pp., 2pp. reverse entry, a few ff. excised at beginning, slightly browned, 1f. from another diary loosely inserted, original blue wrappers, tear affecting upper cover and lacking half of spine, 8vo, [1836]. *** A well written account of a single lady, unescorted in France, staying at Dieppe, Rouen, Harfleur and Tours. Fire at Écommoy. "... got to bed at at the little Country Hotel de la Poste a little before 4 Oclock & being weary fell asleep but was awoke at about ½ past Eleven by the most horried shrieks of women & children the church bells ringing, & then crying 'au feu au feu' I jump'd out of bed & open'd my window when I beheld an immense flame pouring over the houses within a few doors on the same side of the way! never shall I forget the power I experienced. I scarcely thought it possible I could dress I trembled so & first I called for a light, such a scene on the landing place, men in their shirts, & maids in their shifts! I vainly attempted to lace my stays so I merely put in three holes & slipped on the rest of my clothes over night shift & cap & all, & packed up the few things I had about & descended into the kitchen... the poor landlady in Hystericks in her Husbands Arms!"
