Sassoon writes to Dakers that 'Lingual Exercises is not easy to find, as none of the 99 copies were for sale', but that three other works -- Vigils , Picture Show , and The Heart's Journey -- are obtainable, suggesting that Elkin Mathews may be able to locate copies. The previous owner of this copy was Harold Monro, one of the most important figures in the promotion of poetry in the early years of the century; he was the founder of The Poetry Bookshop (which had published Graves' Over the Brazier and where Sassoon had read his poetry) and publisher of The Poetry Review and the Georgian Poetry series (which had included poems by Sassoon). 'Dame' Nellie Burton had been Robbie Ross's mother's maid, and then became a landlady, renting out sets of rooms in 40 Half Moon Street, London, where Ross had rooms in which Sassoon frequently visited him; Burton was 'a huge, forthright woman whom Sassoon came to adore -- she called him "my beloved Saint Siegfried" -- and a fierce protector of her "gentleman" lodgers (many of whom were homosexual)' (M. Egremont, Siegfried Sassoon , London: 2005, p. 84). 2,000 sets of sheets of the first edition were printed, of which 1,500 sets were bound up for the first edition (the remainder were used for the American edition).
