SATURN APOLLO 204 – Saturn Technical Information Handbook, SA-204. Propulsion and Vehicle Engineering Laboratory, George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA, Huntsville, AL. Volumes I, II, III, and IV. Handbook on the rocket originally assigned to the ill-fated Apollo 1 mission. Saturn Apollo (SA) 204 was the Saturn IB rocket planned to carry the Apollo 1 crew in early 1967. A fire within the Apollo 1 Command Module during a test on the launch pad killed the crew of Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee on 27 January 1967. Two investigations of the Apollo vehicle were conducted to correct numerous flaws. This 204 booster was not damaged during the fire and was later used to place the first Lunar Module into Earth orbit. That unmanned flight was named Apollo 5 and was launched on 22 January 1968. Contained throughout each volume are the specification of components plus vendor name and operating condition limits, as well as detailed component drawings and half-tone illustrations. Volume I has an overview of the Saturn IB rocket and Launch Complex 34 at Cape Canaveral. Extensive details on the Saturn IB first stage described including the fuel, oxygen, pressurization, and hydraulic systems plus access and service locations. Volume II continues with information on the control pressure system and a detailed review the H-1 first stage rocket engines. Dozens of drawings break down virtually every component of this engine. The first stage had eight H-1 engines of which four of the outboard units were movable via a hydraulic system which is described. The final section covers the tail section which has eight stabilization fins. Volume III describes the S-IVB or second stage of the SA-204 rocket. Topics include umbilicals and service points, primary propellant system, full and oxidizer pressurization systems, pneumatic control, and the hydrogen/oxygen J-2 rocket engine. Other sections are auxiliary propulsion, stage separation, flight termination, and electrical power sequencing. Volume IV covers the Instrument Unit (IU) and all the associated sub-systems. The IU was the included the guidance and navigation system for vehicle flight plus controlled the operations of the entire vehicle including rocket engines and support systems. Four binders. Over 400 pp. Some foxing.
