SCAICKI, Gottfried de. [ The Four Continents ]. Rome: [c. 1620-1635]. A set of four extremely rare hand-coloured wall maps of the four continents. There is only one other set of which is known to have survived (sold in Paris in the 1960s and is apparently now in a private collection). These maps were inspired by the very rare second state, printed in 1612, of Blaeu's four wall maps of the continents which first appeared in 1608, an event which Schilder describes as 'a major landmark in the cartographic production of the Officina Blaviana ' ( Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica , vol. 5, Alphen aan den Rijn, 1995, p. 75). Of Scaicki little is known, although there is increasing evidence to suggest that he and Geert (Gotfried) van Schayk were one and the same. Van Schayk was a publisher active in Rome between 1620 and 1635, as was Scaicki, whose peculiar name may well have be a phonetic transliteration from 17th-century Dutch into 17th-century Italian. (See A.J. van der Aa, Biographisch woordenboek der Nederlanden , XVII, p. 230). Schayk is known for his bird's-eye view of ancient Rome (Frutaz XXVIII). This set of important wall maps are one of the earliest Italian productions to be inspired by Northern European cartography, and as such were of tremendous influence to map makers throughout Italy. Recent scholarship on Scaicki suggests that these were printed much earlier than has hitherto been beleived (see Burden, The Mapping of North America , Rickmansworth, 1996, no. 157, who suggests a date after 1667). The set comprises: 1. JANSZOON, Willem. Nova Totius Europa Tabula . Rome: Gotfried de Scaicki, n.d. Engraved wall map of Europe on four sheets joined, overall approximately 826 x 1108mm. The map comprises the whole of the continent of Europe, and includes Iceland, the coastline of North Africa, and Asia Minor. The title, imprint and legends set in decorative cartouches, a double-hempisphere terrestial map with the dedication and the arms of the dedicatee, Alessandro Vandomio, flanked by two putti, the sea decorated with galleons and sea monsters, four compass roses, rhumblines, the map set within a graticule border. (Some discolouration and staining, neat repairs and restorations, loss to Belgium neatly repaired, laid down.) 2. JANSZOON, Willem. Nova Totius Asiae Tabula . Rome: Gottfried de Scaicki, n.d. Engraved wall map of the continent of Asia on four sheets joined, overall approximately 823 x 1080mm. The map comprises the whole of Asia and inclueds at the left, part of Madagascar, the East coast of Africa and part of the Mediterranean, and at the right, part of America. The title, imprint and legends, set in decorative cartouches, the seas decorated with galleons, fishing vessels, gods, and sea monsters, legend at left hand margin concerning tiangulation, the whole within a graticule border. (Some staining and discolouration, near repairs and restorations, laid down. 3. JANSZOON, Willem. Nova Totius Africae Tabula . Rome: Gottfried de Scaicki, no date. Engraved wall map of the continent of Africa on four sheets joined, overall approximately 839 x 1085mm. The map comprises the whole of Africa nd Madagascar, including a part of Spain and the Mediterranean, and a part of Arabia. The title, imprint and legends set in decorative strapwork cartouches, the seas decorated with galleons and sea monsters, four compass roses and one wind rose, the whole set within a graticule border. (Some discolouration and staining, neat repairs to verso, neat restorations, laid down.) 4. [JANSZOON, Willem.] America . [Rome: Gottfried de Scaicki, n.d.] Engraved wall map of the Americas on four sheets joined, overall approximately 842 x 1090mm. The map comprises North and South America, part of Antarctica, part of Europe, and part of Africa. The title set in a decorative cartouche surmounted by an armillary globe, flanked by Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci with four bust-length portraits below of Ferdinand Megellan, Francis Drake
