SCARRON, Paul]. Collection de vingt-six Estampes, reprsentant les scnes ... du Roman Comique de Scarron. Dessines par I.B. Oudry . Paris: Desnos, [c.1735]. 2 (392 x 284mm). Letterpress title/front wrapper, 26 numbered engraved plates, of which 10 are both designed and engraved by Oudry, the remaining plates after Oudry, engraved by others, all double-page, folding plates mounted on stubs. (A few small tears at fold neatly repaired, light occasional spotting.) 19th-century half calf, leather spine labels, gilt edges, (slight wear to front cover). Provenance : F. Hamon (booklabel); monogram booklabel; Dr. Sali Guggenheim (1895-1968, sale Christie's 2 May 1995, lot 141). This suite of plates by Oudry illustrating Scarron's celebrated novel has been termed "a splendid series of designs" (Ray French , p.16) and "extrmement intressantes et fort rares" (Cohen-de Ricci). Perhaps because of its rarity, there is some dispute over the number of plates. Cohen-de Ricci, based on Dumesnil, cites 38 scenes designed by Oudry, of which 21 were engraved. Tchemerzine corrects this to 26 plates, as in the present copy. Ten of the plates were engraved as well as designed by Oudry, and the remaining 16 plates were engraved by Huquier. Cohen-de Ricci 943-44; Tchemerzine X, 220.
