Nuremberg: Anton Koberger 12 July 1493. Imperial folio (470 x 320 mm). 326 leaves (20 ff. non num., 266 ff. with ff. 259-261 blank except for headline, 6 ff. non num., 33 ff., 1 ff. non num.), 64 lines and headline, partly double column, Gothic type, two- to three-line printed initials and eight- to fourteen-line initials supplied in red and blue, some with flourishes into margin, occasional underlining in red, woodcut title and 1,809 woodcut illustrations from 645 blocks (Sydney Cockerell's count, Some German Woodcuts of the Fifteenth Century , Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1897, pp. 35-36), over half with old hand-coloring . Fold-out map by William Blaeu illustrating Nuremberg and environs (cut round, 365 x 470 mm) affixed to rear pastedown. Contemporary blind tooled pigskin, partially rebacked and with extremities restored in modern blind stamped calf, with grooves for two clasps. Condition: first two leaves and ff. 173-174, 199, 210, 235-241 and 288-300 repaired without loss to text, small hole to margin of f. 203, not affecting text, minor worming to ff. 251-299 and final leaf, minimally affecting text, mild dampstaining to extremities, thumbsoiling; pigskin soiled, clasps lacking, hinges starting. Provenance: illeg. early inscription to woodcut title and sparse annotations in a similar hand. An attractive Nuremberg Chronicle, the most extensively illustrated work of the fifteenth century, the work illustrated with 1,809 woodcuts by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff and their workshop, including the young Albrecht Dürer Koberger's godson.
