School of Sir Joshua Reynolds Sleeping Girl Oil on canvas 29 1/2 x 24 1/2 inches (75 x 62.2 cm) Provenance: The Marquis of Landowne, Bowood, Calne Baroness Nairne Sold on her behalf by Thomas Agnew & Sons, London to the decedent, June 3, 1955 Exhibited: Royal Academy Exhibition of the Works of the Old Masters, 1884 (as property of the Marquis of Landowne) Literature: David Mannings, Sir Joshua Reynolds A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings (New Haven, 2000), p. 533, cat. no. 2077b A. Graves and W. V. Cronin, A History of the Works of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1899-1901, 4 vols.), vol. 3, p. 1210 Sir Walter Armstrong Sir Joshua Reynolds (New York, 1900), p. 240 C Property of a Greenwich, Connecticut Estate
Glue relined. Extensive bitumen damage in the darker areas. Inpainting of cracks in these areas especially in the upper register. Some touches of inpainting in the lower left corner.
