School of Thomas E. Monro (British, 1759-1833) Pasture Lands Along the River. Unsigned, identified on label from Frederick Keppel & Co., New York, accompanying the lot, inscribed "J.M.W. Turner. Bought at Mr. Wells Sale (of Redleaf) by Mr. Chance of London St. Fitzroy Sqre. L sold by Mr. Chance to Robt Henry Roe in 1869." in ink on previous backing, inscribed "The above inscription was written by W.B. Scott, author of the Life of Albrecht Durer etc: This drawing was authenticated as being unquestionably by Turner, and a fine example of his early style by both Seymour Haden and Dr. John Percy F.R.S. - Dr. Percy is considered to be the best judge(?) living of Turner's work. F.K." in pencil on the same backing. Wash in black and blue with pencil on paper, 10 3/8 x 16 1/8 in. (26.3 x 41.0 cm), framed. Condition: Laid down, unobtrusive toning and staining. Provenance: Ex-collections of Mr. (William?) Wells, Redleaf, Kent; Mr. Chance, London, and Robert Henry Roe 1869, through to Frederick Keppel & Co., New York, and through the estate of Edith Stuyvesant Dresser Vanderbilt Gerry to a private Rhode Island collection.
