SCHRAUBTALER]. Screw-medal, Germany, mid 18th century.
SCHRAUBTALER]. Screw-medal, Germany, mid 18th century. 44 mm diameter. 31 circular miniature prints in fine CONTEMPORARY HAND COLORING. The screw medal shows on each side an allegorical scene in relief, one engraved with the motto "Martif armorum cura" the other "Mars paci et justitia subjectus." The opening and closing engraving are the Virgin and Staints, and a scene of a crucifixion, within these two engravings that are used as versos of the medal in the inside, are 29 most delicately executed engravings showing the history of religious reformation, the persecutions to which the reformers were subjected, and religious wars of the 16th century. The medal was issued in the mid 18th century, in commemoration of the March of the Salzburg emigrants whose tribulations are shown on the last engravings.
