SCHUMANN , Clara (1819-1896). Autograph letter signed (‘Clara Schumann’) to an unidentified recipient, Baden Baden, 5 December 1876, thanking him for a favour, apparently an invitation to a concert in Karlsruhe, which she much admired, especially the performances of the singers Johanna Schwartz and Josef Hauser ('Es war einen schöne Aufführung, Frl. Schwartz und Herr Hauser ganz vortrefflich'), whilst the conducting of Felix Otto Dessoff gave her great pleasure; she regrets not having been able thank the recipient in person ('Wären Sie da gewesen hätte ich mir erlaubt Sie in die Loge zu begrüßen und Ihnen persönlich zu danken'), two pages, 4to , bifolium.

On 4 November 1876, Dessoff, a close friend of Brahms's, conductor of the Badische Staatskapelle in Karlsruhe, had conducted the first performance of the composer's long-awaited Symphony No.1.
