SCHUMANN, Clara (1819-1896), Autograph letter signed to the baritone Julius Christian Stockhausen, St Petersburg, 17/29 March 1864, 6 pages, 8vo . Provenance : Stargardt, 3 May 1957, catalogue 532, lot 310. Clara Schumann writes with the warmest congratulations to Stockhausen on his marriage, asking whether his bride is also a singer; for her own part, she writes of her enthusiastic reception, especially in Russia, where she has performed at the Conservatoire (where she played 'Robert's Concerto with huge success'), as well as giving three chamber music matinées and a major concert at the theatre ('Ich habe hier im Conservatoir-Concert Roberts Concert mit enormem Biefall gespielt, dann 3 Kammermusik-Matinee gegeben und dann ein großes Concert im Theater'), and she has been sufficiently well paid that in spite of the substantial costs of 700 roubles, she has 800 roubles left; she is to perform at the end of the week for the Empress, and give another evening concert before leaving for Moscow. She was particularly lucky in being invited by the Archduchess Helene to stay at her palace: all in all she warmly recommends Russia to Stockhausen, 'it is altogether a completely different scene here from in England', praising the 'extraordinary receptiveness' and 'natural understanding' of the Russians ('es ist eben eine ganz andere Scene hier, als in England. Sie fänden außerordentliche Empfänglichkeit [und] ein natürliches Verständniß'): they particularly love 'Schubert and Schumann (under my name they only know 3 or 4 songs - you'll guess which ones) they love Robert's compositions extraordinarily ... I have always had the greatest success with the Symphonic Studies, the Concerto-Carnaval etc. You see that we are not amongst Hottentots here!', praising also the climate and the heating, which is much superior to that in Germany; in a marginal note she mentions how extremely kind to her Rubinstein has been, 'überhaupt ein vortrefflicher Character'.
