SCHUMANN, Clara (1819-1896). Two autograph letters signed, the first SIGNED WITH BOTH HER MARRIED AND MAIDEN NAMES ('Clara Schumann geb. Wieck') to Professor Kierulff and the directors of the general committee of the 4th North-German music festival, Leipzig, 20 June 1843, declining an invitation to the festival, as the Schumanns plan another journey for the month of July which cannot be put off; 'We are doubly sorry, as we shall thus be deprived of the pleasures of that delightful festival' ('Doppelt leid thut es uns, als wir dadurch der Kunstgenüsse jenes schönen Festes beraubt werden'), one page, 4to , integral address leaf, seal tear; the second signed ('Clara Schumann') to an unidentified recipient, 4 June n.y., writing on behalf of her husband to decline an invitation, as he is unwell, one page, 8vo , bifolium. Provenance : collection of Dr Fritz and Dita Callomon, the first acquired at Leipmannsohn, Berlin; thence by gift. (2)
