SCHUMANN, Robert (1810-1856). Autograph letter signed ('Robert Schumann') to his guardian, Magnus Rudel, Heidelberg, 21 June 1830, one page, 4to , integral address panel, endorsed by recipient (seal tear, slight discolouration, two small areas of staining from small old tape repairs).
SCHUMANN, Robert (1810-1856). Autograph letter signed ('Robert Schumann') to his guardian, Magnus Rudel, Heidelberg, 21 June 1830, one page, 4to , integral address panel, endorsed by recipient (seal tear, slight discolouration, two small areas of staining from small old tape repairs). THE LAST MONTHS OF SCHUMANN'S STUDENT LIFE. Schumann writes to inform his guardian of his urgent need of money, the apparent loss of a letter of 28 April having rendered this even more pressing; apart from that he is cheerful, healthy and busy, and rises early ('Sonst bin ich heiter, gesund und fleißig; stehe jeden Tag um 5 Uhr auf ...'). After the death of Schumann's father in 1826, neither his mother nor Rudel, his guardian, would countenance his studying music, and he initially pursued legal studies in Leipzig and Heidelberg. Two months after this request for funds, he was to write to his guardian again with the life-changing announcement that he was giving up the law for a life in music.
