SCLATER, Philip Lutley (1829-1913). A Monograph of the Jacamars and Puff-Birds, or Families Galbulidae and Bucconidae , London: for the author by R. H. Porter and Dulau and Co., [1879-1882]. 4° (310 x 233mm.). Title with wood-engraved vignette. Subscribers' list. 55 hand-coloured lithographed plates, heightened with gum arabic, by and after J. G. Keulemans. (Occasional light spotting, mainly to preliminaries and text leaves). Contemporary blue morocco, covers with triple fillet border enclosing central fillet and dentelle roll, anthemion and foliate tool at each corner, spine in six compartments with foliate tools, lettered in one, gilt edges. (Spine faded, joints and edges rubbed and scuffed, corners bumped). Provenance : Joan Emlyn (bookplate); C. S. Barlow (morocco label). A FINE COPY BOUND FROM THE ORIGINAL SEVEN PARTS with Keulemans' "beautiful plates" (Anker). This 'complete monograph' includes the names of only 48 subscribers, and is an extension of the author's earlier synopses on the two groups separately published in 1852 (Jacamars) and 1856 (Puff-birds). Sclater was secretary to the founder and editor of The Ibis , and secretary of the Zoological Society for 43 years.
