SCLATER, Philip Lutley and Michael Rogers Oldfield THOMAS. The Book of Antelopes. London: Taylor and Francis for R.H.Porter, 1894-1900. 4 volumes, 4 o (285 x 222 mm). Title vignettes and illustrations, 100 hand-colored lithographic plates by J.Smit and after J.Wolf, J.Smit and others, printed by M. & N. Hanhart. Contemporary green half morocco gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut (spines faded to brown). FIRST EDITION. The plates were prepared under the supervision of Sir Victor Alexander Brooke by Joseph Wolf (who provided many of the drawings) and lithographed by J. Smit. Unfortunately Sir Victor died before he was able to prepare the requisite text. Sclater was given access to the manuscript and, in partnership with Oldfield Thomas (who provided the synonymy and scientific descriptions), saw the work through the presses.
