Briscoe / July 23rd 1866 and on next page, Alice Briscoe's Book, March 28th, 1868. The only Alice E. Briscoe we could locate lived in Trumbull Co., Ohio, born in 1847 in Venice, Seneca Co., Ohio. Her father is listed as James Brisco in the 1850 census (age 27); and J.H. Briscoe in the 1860 census (age 37). In 1860 her brothers, Albert (15), Edward (10) and George (8) are also listed. James does not appear to have served in the Civil War (he would have been on the older end), but Albert enlisted in 1864, presumably right after he turned 18 (and he is listed as 18 in his enlistment record). The History of Trumbull County (Harriet Taylor Upton, A Twentieth Century History of Trumbull County, Ohio. Whipporwill Publications, 1909) indicates that Alice E. Briscoe graduated from Warren High School in 1868. The history of one of the churches in Warren indicates that one of its members was Alice Briscoe Andrews. Albert enlisted in the 171st Ohio Vol. Infy., composed mostly of men from Trumbull County, with a few from Portage, Lake and Geauga Counties (all just east of Cleveland in northeastern Ohio). This unit fought a few days in Kentucky, part of it confronting Morgan's cavalry just outside Cynthiana. They spent most of their 100 days on guard at Johnson's Island. It is unclear where Alice might have obtained the plant material, but she could have had a cousin or friend in service. Over 300,000 men from Trumbull County served in all branches, some in units other than Ohio (especially Pennsylvania, just a few miles away), and a few even for the Confederacy. The Confederate bills, however, could have been available at the prison at Johnson's Island. Prisoners often purchased food and clothing if available. Shull, Hugh.
