Sean Crampton (British, 1919-1999) Dame Kind Fabricated bronze with verdigris patina 166cm high, 149cm wide; unique On view at: The Sculpture Park Sean Crampton trained at Birmingham's Central College of Art, before travelling to Paris to work as an apprentice to renowned sculptor Fernand Léger During the War Crampton saw action in the Western Desert and Sicily, and was awarded the Military Cross and the George Medal. During the years that followed (1946-50) he was Professeur de Sculpture at the Anglo-French Art Centre in St John's Wood, London. His faith in the Catholic church and his interest in the spiritual world were both important aspects in Crampton's life and work, which would often depict a religious event or theme. His works can be seen in churches across the UK, including St Edmund's church in the sculptor's hometown of Calne, but also in Cambridge and Aberdeenshire. Crampton received awards from the Civic Trust (1983) and the Royal Society of British Sculptors (1986), of which he had been president from 1966-71. In addition to exhibiting at the Royal Academy, he had 17 solo shows in London's West End. Dame Kind and Bull Rider below are noted, dated 1978 and 1981 respectively, in John Lloyd Nothing is Profane: Seán Crampton, Sculptor, St Edmund Publications, 2000, p. 29 and p.46
