72 pp. (but several pages lacking or mutilated). (8o) 19.5x13 cm (7¾x5¼"), original gilt-lettered cloth. First Edition. First edition of the second cook book authored by an African American. Preceded only by the extremely rare "A Domestic Cook Book" by Mrs. Malinda Russell (Paw Paw, Michigan, 1866). Fisher was born in 1832 in South Carolina of a black mother and a French father. San Francisco census records for 1880 describe her as a mulatto cook. Mrs. Fisher and her husband operated a pickle factory in San Francisco. One of the rarest American cookbooks. This copy lackihg the front free endpapers, and pp. 15-16 and 29-30; pp. 23-24 with 3-line horizontal strip cut out, pp. 27-28 with top 5 lines cut out, pp. 57-58 with 2-line strip cut out.
