SEDELMAYR, Jacob (S.J.). The first written as contiuous narrative beginning 'Haviendome el Sr. Coronel Dn Diego Ortiz Parrilla Govr y Cap. gnl de esta Prov de Sinaloa y Sonora subministrado la suficiente escolsta del Real Presidio de Terrenate, determine continuar los descubrimientos de la Sierras, Rios y Naciones gentilicas con finanses con esta Pimeria alta ... de las delos Caudalosos Rios de Xilas y Colorado con el animo de volver a informar de ellas para que si Dios es servido, se trate de su pacificacion', and describing their explorations from Burani via Sonsitac to the River Gila, thence to its confluence with the Colorado, crossing the latter and descending the California Peninsula, returning across the bay and back to Busani, giving details of the different nations, their customs etc. 'De las Yumas, y desde donde revolvi aora dos años, prosequi mi viage en el valle, y ala vista del Rio Colorado para abajo, rumbo entre sur, y poniente, y a poco andar como de quatro leguas, nos hallamos enfrente de la Nacion Cahana', and noting the attitude of the natives towards them, finishing with reference to an earlier expedition of 1722. The second written as twenty-two daily entries describing the harsh conditions, often without food or water, encountered on the journey to the Rio de Gila and its confluence with the Colorado, "En el conjunto de los Rios ai tanta abundancia de agua, que no se puede transitar sino es en Balsa, o Canoa, vis mui amens, y poblado de Arboleda, y algunos pardos en las regas de altro rio, y en los vosques; estos son de diversidad de Arboles", giving the number of leagues covered each day with directions. Sedelmayr, a successor of Kino in the exploration of the region, had ascended the Colorado to Bill Williams Fork in 1744, and had continued his explorations despite setbacks due to lack of financial and military support. His work was continued by Wenceslaus Linck (see next not). Some places mentioned in these reports are indicated in manuscript maps of the region by Alzate (1768) and Urrútia (1771); see Charles I Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West , vol.I, (1957), illus. pp.86 & 88.
