Colnaghi & Co. Date: 1814 Description: With 61 hand-colored aquatints by Hill, engraved by I.A. Atkinson (from drawings by Smith), including additional pictorial title; engraved dedication page. (Folio) 36x25 cm (14¼x10"), period red half morocco and marbled boards, spine tooled and lettered in gilt, all edges marbled. First Edition. “This monumental work on costume was illustrated from drawings he [Smith] made from his own collections, afterwards etched by John Augustus Atkinson who may have enlivened the sketches. His principal aim was to make it possible for the theatre and for painters to reproduce historical costume accurately” – British Coloured Books 43; Tooley 455; Colas 2755; Lipperheide 988.
