They are colonial animals, related to sea anemones and stony corals which settle and thrive in low-light levels below 120 feet. Black coral has been harvested for centuries for its amuletic and medicinal powers. Its family name, antipathies means “against suffering.” Early Hawaiians ground black coral branches into medicinal powder and later began using it in jewelry. In 1987, black coral was designated as Hawaii’s State gem. Length 42in
