(First leaf, containing the portrait, laid down and with margins of portrait and verses cut away, title lightly soiled and laid down with loss of inner margin, 2L3 with 8-line slit in one column, 2Q4 with tear to 6 lines causing slight loss on verso, large piece torn from bottom of 2Z6 causing loss to 5 lines recto and verso, four leaves with tear slightly affecting bottom left hand corner of text, another five leaves holed with slight loss, some smaller rust holes affecting a few letters, occasional paper faults, 3B4 and 3D1 of 'Julius Caesar' with line markings, 3G6r ink stained, 3O2-3P2 affected by vertical staining, quires 2H-2I browned, some marginal waterstains, 2N1 cleanly torn at head, several leaves towards end with rust spots blotting text, repair at margin of last two leaves, final leaf rather soiled and creased.) 18th-century mottled calf, spine with green morocco lettering-piece in one compartment, the remainder tooled with repeated crest of a lion rampant encircled by flowers and stars, red speckled edges (joints cracked, spine frayed at head and foot, corners worn). Provenance : Ferguson of Raith (19th-century armorial bookplate, with [?]the earlier family crest on spine). THE FOURTH FOLIO, first setting of the title page without Chiswell's name in the imprint. The Fourth Folio was the last edition of Shakespeare's works to be published in the 17th century. A reprint of the Third Folio, it was issued by Henry Herringman in conjunction with other booksellers, and is both in a larger font and more liberally spaced than the three earlier editions. The printer of the Comedies, and also of the 6 preliminary leaves, has been identified from the ornaments as Robert Roberts.
