SHAKESPEARE, William (1564-1616). The Poems . London: William Pickering, 1832. 8° (158 x 98mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece. Cosway-style binding in later red morocco gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for Chas. J. Sawyer, upper cover with centrally-placed arms of Shakespeare in gilt, the shield tooled onto yellow and black morocco onlays, partially encircled by a stylised laurel wreath, within a border of fillets and roll tools with stylised foliage cornerpieces, the lower cover with a matching outer border around a gilt tooled central motif of a lyre surrounded by flowers and foliage, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with repeat pattern centred on a small heart tool surrounded by fillets, foliage and dots, gilt turn-ins, the upper cover with black morocco doublure with central shaped sunken panel with inlaid original oval portrait miniature of Shakespeare with gilt metal surround and gilt tooling incorporating six inset seed pearls, the outer border of the doublure with stylised foliage and a quotation from Ben Jonson, all in gilt, the lower cover with black morocco doublure simply tooled with a gilt border, watered-silk liners, gilt edges (small split to lower hinge).
