SHAKESPEARE, William (1564-1616). The Whole Contention betweene the two Famous Houses, Lancaster and Yorke. With the Tragicall ends of the good Duke Humfrey, Richard Duke of Yorke, and King Henrie the sixt. Divided into two Parts: And newly corrected and enlarged . London: [William Jaggard] for T.P. [Thomas Pavier, 1619]. 4 o (177 x 125 mm). Collation : A-H 4 (Henry VI part 2); I-Q 4 (Henry VI part 3). 64 leaves. Printer's woodcut device, woodcut head-pieces and initials. (A pale dampstain affecting some upper fore-corners slightly.) Modern red morocco gilt, edges gilt, by Riviere; cloth slipcase. REVISED THIRD EDITION, with additions, of two genuine Shakespeare plays, Henry VI parts 2 and 3 . The corrections, which were possibly taken from play-manuscripts, are not insignificant and anticipate the redactions in the First Folio. Both the first and second editions of either part appeared separately, the so-called 'bad quartos' (STC 26099 and 21006, and STC 26100 and 21006a respectively); they were probably reported versions, supplying abridged and corrupt texts. Henry VI part 1 was first published in the First Folio. This edition formed the first section of the unauthorized 1619 Jaggard-Pavier collection of Shakespeare plays. It was immediately followed by Pericles (with its own title), whose signatures continue the series (Greg 284d). Pavier no doubt sold Henry VI and Pericles both separately and together and copies survive either way. FINE CONDITION. STC 26101; Greg 119c and 138c (and see III, p. 1107).
