SHARPE, Richard Bowdler (1847-1909). On the Birds collected by Mr. F.J. Jackson .. during his recent expedition to Uganda through the territory of the Imperial British East-African Company by R. Bowdler Sharpe... with notes by the collector. [N.p.: n.d. but ?1892]. 5 parts in one volume, 8° (225 x 140mm). Two section titles, as issued. 8 hand-coloured lithographic plates by J.G. Keulemans, printed by Mintern Bros. (Small chip to outer blank margin of first plate.) Modern blue morocco-backed marbled boards, original wrappers bound in, the upper wrapper acting as a general title (wrappers torn with loss and laid down). Provenance : pencilled notes by an early unidentified hand. A RARE offprint gathering together five articles by Bowdler Sharpe, originally published in The Ibis between April 1891 and October 1892. Charles John ANDERSSON (1827-1867). Notes on the birds of Damara Land and the adjacent countries of south-west Africa... Arranged and edited by John Henry Gurney... London: Taylor & Francis for John van Voorst, 1872. 8° (220 x 142mm). 2pp. publisher's advertisements at back. Lithographic map, hand-coloured in outline, 4 lithographic plates, largely unopened. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine lightly soiled, surface of covers lightly affected by damp). FIRST EDITION. BM(NH) I,p.43; Mendelssohn I,p.42; Zimmer p.9. Edgar Leopold LAYARD (1825?-1900). The Birds of South Africa. A descriptive catalogue of all the known species ocurring south of the 28th parallel of south latitude. Cape Town & London: J.C. Juta and Longman, Green, & Co., 1867. 8° (224 x 135mm). Erratic pagination with errata slip between p.192 and the following page pointing this out. 1 plate, largely unopened. (Neat repairs to blank margins of final preface leaf, B8 and C2.) Modern half morocco gilt, red morocco lettering-pieces to spine. BM(NH) III,p.1071; Mendelssohn I,p.871; Zimmer p.378. G. J. BROINOWSKI (editor). The Avi-Fauna of Australia: comprising Gould's Birds of Australia, and all other birds discovered in the Australian colonies since 1850. [N.p., but Australia:] 1897. 4° (282 x 218mm). Title (verso blank), 2pp. 'Advertisemant', 6pp. of unnumbered text. 4 chromolithographic plates. Original black paper wrappers (backstrip lacking), 20th-century cloth box, red morocco lettering-piece on upper cover. Provenance : pencilled note in an unidentified hand at foot of second page of 'Advertisement'). A VERY RARE trial issue/prospectus for a work which was never published. Broinowski's copy in the Mitchell Library appears to be the only other example; together with four others of ornithological interest. (8)
