SHARPE, Richard Scrafton. Dame Wiggins of Lee and her Seven Wonderful Cats. A humorous Tale. Written pricipally by a Lady of Ninety. Embellished with sixteen coloured engravings. Illustrations after R. Sennet. London: Dean and Munday, and A.K. Newman, n.d. [circa 1825]. 8 o (179 x 109 mm). Handcolored woodcut frontispiece, hand-colored woodcut title vignette and 14 half page woodcut illustrations in text, printed on recto's only (recto of frontispiece and verso of last leaf covered with ink squigles, some minor staining). Original printed wrappers (light dust soiling); quarter morocco clamshell box. Early edition. The A.K. Newman, 1823 edition has 18 colored illustrations and the 1850 Thos. Dean & son edition has 15 illustrations. This is the book that John Ruskin liked so much, that he issued his own version in 1885, with additional verses by him and additional illustrations by his friend Kate Greenaway Gumuchian 5319; See Osborne Collection p. 60 and p. 631.
