SHAW, George Bernard (1856-1950). Autograph letter signed to [Henry Marriott] Paget, Ayot St Lawrence, 3 January 1934; autograph photographic postcard signed to Mrs Henry Paget 29 June 1917; autograph letter signed to Florence Farr ('Mrs FF Emery'), 21 June 1914; autograph letter signed, autograph postcard signed and typed letter signed to Dorothy Paget (Mrs Rhodes), 9 February 1915, 6 February 1924 and 30 July 1946; and an autograph postcard signed to Clarkson Rose, 5 September 1947; altogether 8½ pages, mostly 8vo ; with an autograph fragment cut from a photographic portrait postcard and a sketch by H.M. Paget of Shaw reclining in a chair, in pencil and wash, 1888, on a leaf from a sketchbook, approximately 95 x 160 mm ; and printed items referring to the Malvern Festival. Shaw replies to Paget in mock outrage, 'To call my most serious attention to the fact that people who have neither ears nor education say Philip I when they should say Philippi and to conclude with the casual remark that you have been on your back for more than two years ... To hell with Philippi!', recommending 'a bonesetter' and thanking him for a drawing: 'Pencil drawing is a great art ... Raphael also had a touch with a pencil'. He acknowledges Florence Farr's repayment of a loan, and writes to Mrs Henry Paget of an exchange with a correspondent who has died [Florence Farr, her sister]. He refuses Dorothy Paget a part, 'there's only one woman's part in it; and I doubt if Sybil will give you that' [ St Joan ], and asks about photographs of Florence Farr. Clarkson Rose, a pantomime actor, is rebuked, 'A man does not start writing pantomimes at 91'. Henry Marriott Paget one of a family of painters and illustrators, was the brother-in-law of Florence Farr, the actress and mistress of first Shaw and then W.B. Yeats. Shaw, while unenthusiastic about her acting, saw her as his ideal New Woman, but failed to propose marriage when she obtained her divorce in 1895. Yeats appealed to her romantic side, but she eventually went to live in Ceylon. She remained on friendly terms with both writers and corresponded with them until her death. (12)
